Majestic & dramatic, the Tatras are the highest mountain range in Poland with the highest peak - Rysy - reaching 2499m above sea level. The Tatra landscape is of rugged granite peaks rising above dense forests and noisy streams running along its many valleys. Dramatic waterfalls, picturesque mountain lakes and peaceful meadows in the forest clearings complete the picture of this area of outstanding beauty.
The Tatra National Park covers the whole area of the Tatras protecting the landscape and hundreds of species of plants and animals. Tatra Mountains is one of very few places in Europe where the three European largest predators live: the bear, the wolf and the lynx.
Zakopane makes an excellent base for holidays in Tatra mountains. With its picturesque location and traditional highlanders' style architecture, Zakopane is a real gem and has retained a village feel despite being a very popular tourist resort.
Accommodation options in Zakopane range from guest houses to five star hotels. Eating out options are equally impressive with restaurants offering traditional regional dishes and often live music by local folk bands.
In winter, Zakopane becomes Poland's capital of winter sports with skiers everywhere and competitions taking place at the ski jump. The town gets very crowded in the summer and around Christmas & the New Year but if you avoid the main street Krupowki at that time, your experience of the Tatra Mountains and Zakopane will remain unspoilt.
The nearest airport is in Krakow. From Krakow there is a 2 hour coach journey to Zakopane, with some lovely views. The buses to Zakopane depart from the bus station located next to Krakow's main railway station.
